MAC/VIVO Max5 Overview (Nov 19 & Dec 1st)

Yesterday's Artist Talk/Max5 Overview at VIVO was swamped with 20 high school students, and about 10 very stoked regulars.

Co-presented via VIVO Media Arts Centre and Coop Radio's MAC (Media Arts Committee) the Max5 workshop, featured documentation and dissection of a few of my previous installation works which used Max/MSP, as well as a demo of Max for Live.

BestBefore @ On The Boards/Seattle

BestBefore the game/play i designed and act in is on tour. We just finished a run at On The Boards (OTB/Seattle). We were warmly welcomed and the the show was very well received. Here is some reaction on the OTB website.

Now off to Berlin, where the show changes a little (i hope!) with the substitution of Arjan Dhupia, a 30year-old Berlin-/Brighton-based scientist writing his PHD on experimental game design, for Bob William, NDP Politician, in the cast. I'm a little weary of changes as this point as the cast has really warmed into their roles as themselves but with 200 virtual actors, and we all are improvising well together.

Heaven’s Breath

A collaboration between Chris Welsby, Brady Marks and Scheherazaad Cooper

March 21 – August 30, 2009

The new media installation Heaven’s Breath is inspired by an eleventh century figurine depicting the Hindu God, Shiva, performing the dance of creation and destruction. According to the Hindu faith, Shiva's dance brought the universe into existence, not unlike the Big Bang of Western scientific cosmology. Heaven's Breath combines Oddisi dance with interactive technology and real time weather data. The animation of images and accompanying sound effects is driven by the power of the wind, which is in turn driven by the rotation of the earth. In this way Heaven's Breath seeks to connect Shiva's dance, via the earth's orbit, to the gravitational forces of the solar system and the far reaches of the universe. Drawing on the cosmologies of East and West, and the knowledge of the ancient and modern world, the installation uses digital technology to make connections between science, religion and art.

W2 - Studio XX - Residency

Documentation of the W2-StudioXX Residency presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery/FUSE, the work is a remapping of Vancouver's downtowm from the points of view of Amy Kazymerchyk, Brady Marks, Sharon Burns, Honey Mae, Jean Fong, Mirae Rosner, Erin de Zwart, Ali Lohan and Bérengère Marin Dubuard (Beewoo)

The 3 screens display 9 20min video loops. After each 20min loop different audio from 2 of the 9 videos is presented to the left and right wireless headphones in sync. Overlaid on the video wall are GPS traces of the routes taken by the videographers.

Arduino Speaks to LANC Devices (Camera)

Part of an upcoming installation for Judy Radul, may use the Arduino Board to control a sony LANC camera, so I hacked up a test, which works great thanks to some fancy code to detect the framing boundaries for LANC, here it is. Enjoy!

Open source so let me know if you hack it some more.

We got it! Michael Filimowicz , Melanie Cassidy, Philippe Pasquier and I, will be producing Lingua Aqua, in the Surrey Bear Creek Park.

It's a video pavilion under a fountain, featuring a submerged video screen, and 4 channel sound. There are details on Michael's site, here.

Ok we were also in the running for another one, but hey it wouldn't be fair to give us two now would it!

But, if you happen to have a green way that needs a completely amazing sonic installation, let me know. And this gives me an idea, a virtual gallery of art projects that only get to the proposal stage, there must be tons of great ones out there. Guest I file that under fabulous ideas for other lives. Cause I'm gonna be most busy for the next few month getting this little honey up and running. Hey it probably exists, just wait 3 secs, ok now if really does.

Spring Theory is an interactive sonic feedback system. Sound is created in a feedback cycle between speakers attached to the bottom of the 4 springs suspended from the ceiling. At the top of the springs the sound in the vibrating springs is picked up by contact microphones. This audio is then processed and feed back to the speakers attached to the spring's base.

Interactors can play this instrument, damping the feedback or providing a sonic stimulus for the feedback network. They may also alter the audio processing system. Spring Theory is a physical instrument which combines folk electronics, or a DYI attitude to sound synthesis, with digital audio signal processing in a playful hands-on context. In this way it forms an inviting, social and sonicly rewarding environment for play in an intimidating technological domain.

I am Listening. Are you? Unlike our eyes our ears have no lids. We are always listening. Even when we are asleep we are listening. I am Listening is a listening machine. It practices synesthesia misinterpreting sound into light, but the lights move as sound moves: a wave of still lights. Just as sound moves as a wave of still air. Is I am Listening it a good listener? Not really, but seeing it listen may make you aware of your superior ability to hear or draw your attention to sounds that you did not hear.

I am Listening is an audio-responsive interactive listening machine. Hanging from each of strand is a microphone and 8 white LED lights. When the microphone is stimulated by sound, the LED light animates upward in response. Louder sounds makes the animation go faster. When the top LED is lit and more sound is detected, the light jumps back to the bottom and the cycle continues.

G33K 0U7 There are three parts here, a small Op-Amp, which is right next to the electret mic, so as not to make a radio, which is what happens if you amplify a 10ft unshielded cable, also known as an antenna ;). I used a SL386 (NL386) audio OpAmp on the electret microphone. My circuits are adapted from the TinkerLog's and José Pino's in-turn with a little reference to a electret microphone powering page and a lovely resistor calculator page . This audio circuit sounds pretty low-fi but it does a good enough job to measure the amplitude of the sounds. The installation was reacting nicely to raised voices during the noisy opening from the other side of the lobby. The 2nd component, the Arduino, reads the the output of the Op-Amp on the analogue in, and the Arduino controls the last component a bank of shift registers (595) which act as demultiplexers, allowing me to to use only 3+N digital output pins to control N strands of wires with 8 LEDs each. We made 8 strands and each Arduino board ended up connected to 4 strands, with 1 mic and 8 LED on on each strand. The circuit for the shift register is from an Arduino Tutorial.

Importantly I discovered that the when using long cables (>10ft) in a circuit you must to keep your power clean! I had a working circuit for days that did not scale up to the installation size. It sucked. I finally solved this with Raymond's help by (a) Shielding the power, and (b) placing a low (0.047 micro Farad) non-polarized capacitor across the power on my distant audio circuit. Alex on the tinker blog overcame his noise issues by using battery power rather than the USB power. This is not work for me, and I needed the installation to run for a year. It is true however that flashing the built-in LED and use of the serial link created noise in my circuit, so my release version does has those facilities disabled.

PRJ: Sound Design for Soft(n)

For the DEAF07 (Dutch Electronic Art Festival) I help breathe a little life into the soft(n) "pillows". For for sound design I only had a pulse width modulator, normally used to run a motor, to work with. However I managed to make 3 classes of sounds and map them to the 3 states of this little family of soft objects.

First a little background. These little guys - who are little hybrids between vegetables, furniture and tamagoshi - are in a (wireless) network, they communicated the interactions they are having to each other. Their modes of interaction are touch (including vibration), sound and light. They can be touched and 'sence/measure' the quality of these touches. They then react, sharing this their interactions with the peoples in the space with the other soft(n) objects, which feeds back to the people in the space.

If they are ignored they fall asleep, and start to breath with their lights like a sleeping mac, while emitting small sleep talking chirps. If they are thrown around, they cry, weeee! Each sound is generated on the fly and parameterized by the quality and quantity of the interaction. Touch is mapped to various laban
touch types. The touch is acknowledges by a sound, pattern/greeting. This "vocalization" is then shared to the other pillows in a chain, each of which rifs off the original vocalization, in a descending echo chain, using a variety of modes. Each pillow has it's own mode, which reflects it's character.

Anyway long story short, they are a platform for researching touch based liminally ambient interactions. Are they pets, homeware or emotional support devices? The answer is yes, a hybrid of those and maybe more. more pictures...

Stalking Jeff Wall

Who is this? Why is he so happy? He is a photographer from Taiwan. His name Wei-Li Yeh. Photographers normally walk around framing things in their heads. They separate, composite and compose - seeing the world as pasted together like punk rock posters. I've seen it happen. Sometimes they even block off images like directors with their hands framing a rectangle.

S asked him about this, and he said something interesting, that he doesn't do this. Why? Because he's writer too. Interesting. This is a clue. Do writers synthesis a world?

Anyway the facts are different, and less interesting. He's hear staying with Hank Bull at the Western Front, Hank cooks Wei-Hi cleans. He's doing a site visit, i think this means he's looking at where his show will be, most likely Centre A will bring him out again.

Another interesting thing, his job is too travel around the world and show his work but he doesn't like travelling. Poor guy. But really smart really show some appreciation of our little problem - the DTES.

Lastly one more thing to say, this second picture is of the photographer looking at the picture he just took, of S and I. Ok I lied one more thing. He took a picture of him self outside Jeff Walls DTES Studio, and was later even more thrilled when i introduced him to Khan who does all Jeff's prints.

Fingers and Wrists

This may not work for you, but i get all charged up and excited when i'm working on my computer. Consequently I'm a hard clicker and was having finger and wrist pain, from this rushing in the flow state. I had a long hard look and my fingers and wrists and thought about them.

It looks like my thumb is the polymorphic thug in the group, the others are a family of delicate articulators. I think my ancestors have been digging their thumbs into oranges for a few million years and handling complexly shaped objects delicately with the rest of the family.

The trackball seems to fit this view better than the mouse. Fingers for delicate placement and the thumb bashing away in it's executive mode.

Might work 4 u 2. The wrist thing i have not completely worked out to my happiness, except to keep it straight with a gel pad, this also prevents the track ball's body applying pressure on the middle of the hand/wrist which is BAD. I've also added a group of fuzzies to the buttons so that i have tactile feedback to the position of my thumb, because the button is too big. These are finally wearing out.

I think the real solution is to relax and touch lightly, but habits are hard to change, a friend of mine told me to start with attention to the breath.

I use a Logitech Marble Mouse USB. Kensington makes one a cute blue glowing one.

Project Description

Lost is an ambient audio-visual installation, mapping the activity of a transient community of unwitting` performers, who are participating in peer-to-peer file-sharing. At this moment; music, video, images and software are being freely traded in a community of networked peers. This network has no no centre; it is an ephemeral cloud, a pool of pop consciousness. List attempts to touch the surface of this pool, and obtain a sense of what it's like in this abstract place?

Posing as a member of the network, this installation betrays its peers and submits for public scrutiny the flow of live queries from throughout the global network. These queries form a base, often almost pornographic, revealing essay of popular desire.

The installation employs two modes of presentation to depict this flow of desire; a simple visual display shows a sampling of the torrent of queries and provides the audience with a introduction to the audio presentation. This display is more complex multi-dimension rendering: A spatialized storm of sharp and subdued bursts of sound immerses the listener in a field of sound corresponding to every arriving query. A blurred voice chants out queries letter by letter, reflecting the fractured network data. Ever present is the deep hum of the network connection, which at times falters if our node looses its connection to another peer. When the rate of porn requests peaks the soundscape model is broken introducing a more musical layer of rhythmic sinister breath.

Project Status

Lost was completed in the December 2003 in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Computing Arts and Design Science (CADS) department's Masters of Applied Science Program at Simon Fraser University. Lost has been presented to students and staff in the CADS Interactivity Lab.

Installation Requirements

This project is implemented as a live custom software and commodity hardware system. The artist will need to be on site to perform the installation. Once installed Lost will run continuously without attendance. The artist will require a high-speed internet connection, LCD projector, screen and 4 powered speakers. The artist will supply the remaining software and hardware.

Review - Signal and Noise 2006

: After the 3 dense days and now that I can write again, I can try divine that which was Signal and Noise 2006. A hot tighty curated sound, video and performance/media feast on the theme Body, Bodier, Bodiest. No doubt this theme is an overflowing of the exhuberbant passions of one Velveeta "Jackson" Krisp. But in truth the credit, and credit is due, must be piled high at the feet of the whole Video In crew - Volunteers, Interns, Staff and Exhibiting Artists. What a Slick and Outstanding show - Woweee.
